More about the TaskTool |
The TaskTool is intended for users of Microsoft Windows 3.1 who are not ready, willing or able to follow Microsofts latest upgrade path or are tired of waiting for NT 4.0. It provides the most powerful features of Microsofts latest operating system without the need to upgrade to the latest hardware. The TaskTool is an economical alternative to Microsoft Windows 95. It brings the most powerful user interface features of Microsofts latest version of Windows to older machines. Like Windows 95, it allows users to start their favorite programs with a single mouse-click as well as making it easier to navigate between multiple running programs. The TaskTool is designed to be effective on all machines; from a 286 running 3.1 to the latest Pentium III. How will I use the TaskTool? The TaskTool was designed to be easy to use. It provides a minimal number of features in order to keep things simple and straight-forward. The intent of the TaskTool is to make you more productive. When the TaskTool is started, it will appear at the lower end of your screen. All of the programs that are currently running are displayed in a row across the bottom of the screen. To change your context to a different program, just click on its corresponding task button. The TaskTool makes it easy to navigate among several programs that are all open at once. As programs are started and stopped, the TaskTool will automatically update itself to reflect the current state of things. The TaskTool makes it easy to start your favorite programs. To see the TaskTool menu, click on the TaskTool button. Its at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The TaskTool menu gives you a quick way to start the tools that you need most. File Manager, the DOS prompt, and Control Panel are automatically configured for you. If you click once on a menu item, the corresponding program will be started immediately. The real power of the TaskTool menu is that you can customize it. If you press the Settings menu item near the bottom of the TaskTool menu, the Settings screen will appear. The Settings screen gives you a way to add new items to the TaskTool menu. The TaskTool allows you to be more productive by making it easy to get to the tools that you use most. From the Settings screen, you can add additional items to the TaskTool menu by clicking the Add button. The Add Menu Item screen prompts you for the three things that the TaskTool needs to know to make a new menu item: Menu Item Name, Program Name, and Arguments. The Menu Item Name is the title that will appear on the TaskTool Menu (like Paint Brush). The program name should specify the full DOS path of the program that you want to run (ex. C:\WINDOWS\PBRUSH.EXE). The Browse button makes it easier to tell the TaskTool the Program Name. Just click Browse, find the program you want, and press OK. The Arguments field gives you a way to supply optional command-line arguments to the program. If you dont need this feature, or youre not sure, just leave it blank. Press the OK button when you are ready to return to the Settings screen. The Settings screen makes it easy to add, remove, or change the items on the TaskTool menu. When you are finished working with the Settings screen, press OK to return to Windows. Any changes that you made will be applied to the TaskTool menu. As an additional option, the Settings screen allows you to tell the TaskTool to hide itself when its not being used. When the Hide The TaskTool box is checked, the TaskTool will automatically move itself downward to the very bottom of your screen. This makes more room for the programs that youre using. If you need to use the TaskTool, simply move your mouse to the very bottom of the screen. It will automatically rise up to were you can use it. When the mouse moves away from the TaskTool, it will sink back down to the very bottom of the screen. The TaskTool has a Run menu item that is located at the bottom of the TaskTool menu. The Run command behaves in the same manner as Program Managers File - Run menu item. The TaskTool Run command offers the advantage of tracking the names of the programs that have been run most recently. This makes it easy to restart a program that you use often, but have not added to the TaskTool menu. For even more information check out the TaskTool revision history.
